Our Mission

The funds we raise together will be given to legitimate animal rescue organizations that are struggling to do great things for our companion animals in our communities.

We are a non-profit 501(c)3 organization and rely soley on individual and corporate donations to continue to support companion animal rescues, spays and neuters, help for abused animals, etc.

The short term goal of That’s What Friends Are For, Inc. is to raise money to give to animal rescue groups that provide spay and neuter, medical care, food, shelter and love to the companion animals in our communities.  One of the most important messages we want to get out is to spay or neuter all pets because there are just not enough homes for all the puppies and kittens brought into the world. The results from this are abandonment or mass euthanizing of these animals.  On top of these babies, there are many adult cats and dogs being abandoned, neglected, mistreated or put into shelters.  Some of this is being brought on by the effects of the downward spiraling economy, and some because people lack good information about animal welfare.  But these animals are also being euthanized.

We can stop the cycle.  Please have your pets spayed or neutered.  Please donate to our fund that helps pet owners who cannot afford to spay and neuter their pets.  We also support TNR which is trap, neuter and release of feral cats. This theory stops feral cats from breeding and re-releases the unadoptable cats back into their own communities.

We help groups that educate kids and adults in more humane pet care, which teaches them not only how to care for their pets, but shows them the results of what happens by not spaying and neutering pets. It also helps them to understand and break the cycle that leads from violent behavior toward animals to violent behavior towards people.

It is well documented how good pets are for our health.  They are very calming and help to reduce blood pressure from stress.  Dogs require so much activity that it gives their people great exercise just playing with them or walking them.  Pets that are taken to visit children and adults in hospital settings give people such a bright spot in their day that they tend to have a better attitude and heal faster.  We want to get more of this going on in our community to solve two problems:  rescue and give purpose to more animals and help people in so many ways.

Our long term goal is to obtain some property and have a sanctuary/shelter built so that we can be a bigger part of the solution to these problems.  We dream of some generous person, business or group of people, donating land that they can write off as a tax deduction to our IRS tax exempt charity so that we can build a place to care for all the animals that need our help and love.  Another attainable goal is to be a no-kill society.  This can be accomplished if we work together to spay & neuter, educate and stop puppy mills by not buying but adopting.

We will continue to have fundraising events like our annual golf tournament and auction to raise more funds for our causes.  None of us take a salary for the work we do.  All donations go directly to animal care, and some basic business costs.

There are many government subsidies and entitlements for people that need help with food, shelter, education and more, but there are no government subsidies or entitlement programs for our companion animals.  They depend solely on us and the reward is that they give us so much unconditional love in return.  It is up to us to look out for them.

Thank you for your support, your ideas for fundraisers, for spreading the word.

Who We Are: Old Fella Burke County Animal Rescue is the oldest and largest licensed rescue group operating in Burke County. We are the only registered non-profit with 501C3.   Before our rescue began, several, caring, private citizens picked up strays and found homes for them.  Most strays were left to fend for themselves on the rural roads and at the county dumpsters. Some were left at the city pound with only one fate.  These animals had no opportunity to be adopted or saved.

Our Mission:

The mission of this organization shall be:
     a. the prevention of cruelty to animals
     b. the provision of humane education materials to children and the general public
     c. the promotion of early, aggressive spay/neuter programs
     d. to increase the quality of life of unwanted and homeless animals by providing   necessary care and seeking suitable homes through adoption.
     e. to work cooperatively with local, state and national rescues/shelters groups with similar objectives
     f. to be a "no kill" in philosophy, wherein euthanasia is performed only for medical necessity, as well as public safety, as determined by a veterinarian
     g. to never knowingly allow any animal in our care to undergo any experimentation or to release any animal for such experimentation

Vision:

We envision the day when no animal will suffer because of human abuse, neglect or ignorance and that every pet born will be assured of a good home and care for a lifetime.
